Surrendering

Before considering rehoming your pet, we encourage you to explore the various alternatives available. At SCAR, we offer whatever support you need, whether it’s behavioural training tips or low-cost veterinary care, our goal is to provide you with the tools and support needed to overcome obstacles and keep your pet in your loving care.

Please review the options below and contact our team for more information.

Together, we can find alternative solutions that prioritise the well-being and happiness of both you and your beloved companion.

We recognise that the rising cost of living impacts many households. During these challenging times, we offer support through our Pet Food Pantry, a community outreach program that provides food and other donated items such as flea treatments, worming medications, and cat litter.

Navigating behavioural issues in your beloved pet can be a frustrating time, but at SCAR, we’re here to offer support and our expertise in animal behaviour. Before contemplating the heartbreaking decision of surrendering your furry friend, please consider working with our experienced trainers to discuss your pet’s behaviour. They can help to create a personalised training plan to help you and your pet overcome your challenges.

Whatever the behavioural complexities, from separation anxiety to leash reactivity, our trainers are available to assess and provide realistic expectations for your given situation. At SCAR, we embrace a fear free journey with positive reinforcement techniques to strengthen your connection between you and companion. Our ultimate mission isn’t just to resolve immediate behavioural concerns, but to arm you with the tools and knowledge essential for long-term success.

Facing the difficult decision of surrendering a pet due to medical concerns is a hard decision. At SCAR, our hearts go out to you during this challenging time, and we’re here to extend our support and empathy. Before making any decisions, we encourage you to explore our low-cost Community Animal Hospital, where compassionate care is at the core of everything we do.

Within our on-site hospital, our devoted veterinary team is dedicated to providing the highest standard of care to pets facing medical challenges. From routine check-ups to complex procedures, we approach each case with expertise, ensuring that every furry patient receives the individualised attention they deserve. Our commitment goes beyond just treating ailments; it’s about nurturing the health and happiness of your beloved companion.

In times of crisis, we offer emergency pet boarding via our Safe House for Pets program. Whether you’re facing a sudden illness, leaving a situation of family and domestic violence, or even homelessness, we understand the importance of keeping pets safe during difficult times. Our Safe House for Pets program provides temporary shelter, food, and medical care for pets while their owners work to stabilise their situation. Rest assured that your pet will be in good hands, receiving the care and attention they deserve until you are able to reunite with them.

Our Owner Rehoming Assistance Program at SCAR aims to empower the pet owner and to make the process of finding a new home for your pet as seamless as possible. We understand the challenges that come with rehoming a beloved companion, which is why our experienced staff works closely with you to match your pet directly with the perfect new family. From creating engaging profiles to conducting thorough screenings, we are committed to ensuring that your pet finds a loving home where they will thrive. With our support and resources, we will help you find a new home for your pet where they will embark on a new journey filled with love and care.

If you’ve explored all the options above and still need to surrender your pet, you can do so with us at SCAR. We strive to make this delicate process as simple as possible with our three-step process.

1: Fill in a Surrender Form

This form will provide us with a clear picture of your pet and offer the essential information our team requires to assess their needs.

2: Pre-Surrender health check and behaviour check

Before accepting your pet at SCAR, we want to be sure that we can rehome them. Our shelter team will organise a pre-surrender appointment where our team will assess the health and temperament of your pet. To help with this process, any previous behaviour or medical history you have should be brought along or previously sent to us. While the animal may not be taken into our care on the same day, this assessment ensures that we can tailor our approach to meet their specific needs.

Please note: We do require a surrender fee of $80 per pet to help us cover the time each surrender takes our team, from administration costs to the time our vet team and trainer spend on assessments and reports etc.

3: Surrender Drop Off

Once the health check and behaviour assessment are completed, and we are confident that we can rehome your pet, we work with you to book a surrender date and time that is convenient for both you and our team. At this time, we will complete the surrender and microchip transfer paperwork.

Upon surrendering your pet, they will undergo any additional medical services or behavioural training required to help them in their new homes. Whether it’s at our shelter or through our foster care system, our goal is to ensure that every animal receives the care and attention they need to succeed.

Finally, after receiving the necessary care and support, your pet will be made available for adoption on our website. Our dedicated team works tirelessly to find the perfect match for each animal, ensuring that they can embark on a new journey filled with love, care, and companionship. Through this comprehensive process, we strive to make a positive impact, ensuring that every animal receives the second chance they deserve.
