End of Life Program

Change a Life — and Yours!

Adopting an animal from our End of Life (EOL) Program can be a deeply rewarding experience for both you and the pet.

What is SCAR’s End of Life Program?

Sadly, only around 25% of senior pets in shelters and pounds find homes, and the odds are even worse for animals with serious or terminal health conditions. To combat these harsh statistics, SCAR has established the EOL Program for our ongoing medical and senior pets.

Unlike traditional adoption, EOL adoption focuses on providing priceless end-of-life care to pets who might otherwise spend their final days alone. It’s a unique opportunity to give them love and comfort they may have never known.

Who Qualifies for the EOL Program?

Not all EOL pets are seniors. They could be younger cats and dogs diagnosed with ongoing, serious or terminal conditions like renal failure, heart disease, or even cancers. As long as the animal has a good quality of life and is not in uncontrollable pain, we believe they deserve to spend their remaining time surrounded by love and joy.

Depending on their diagnosis, an EOL pet might have weeks, months, or even years with their adoptive family. Just like people, pets can beat the odds and live longer than expected!

Why You Should Get Involved

Providing love to an EOL pet is incredibly rewarding, despite the inevitable heartbreak of saying goodbye. Take Bailey’s story, for example.

Rescued by SCAR in 2016, Bailey had terminal cancer and had never experienced the warmth of a loving home. Quickly becoming a staff favourite, Bailey showed so much life and character that we knew we had to do whatever we could to make his final months the best they could possibly be. And it didn’t take long for us to find this special boy and EOL home. Although his new family knew that Bailey may not be around for long, he spent an amazing 3 months in their care experiencing the joys of a warm cosy bed, surrounded by a family that loved him before he passed away by their side. Bailey even got his very own bucket list adventure, which included a steak and egg breakfast, a visit to a fire station and his very own birthday party!

How to Adopt an EOL Pet

EOL adoption isn’t for everyone. It can be time-consuming, requiring frequent vet visits, special diets, and medications. However, if you’re looking for a way to make a huge difference in the life of a special needs pet, this program could be perfect for you.

These pets may have limited time left, but feeling the love of a family can make all the difference — and they give back just as much love in return.

What to Expect

When you adopt an EOL pet, you receive:

  • A tailored medical care plan for your pet’s ongoing needs
  • Information and resources to support you throughout your pet’s life
  • Guidance on treatment options
  • Advice on assessing your pet’s quality of life and when it might be time to say goodbye
  • Ongoing support from our vet and shelter team for the life of the pet
