Welcome to the Owner Assisted Rehoming Program (OARP)
SCAR’s OARP is an initiative designed to reduce the number of animals being relinquished to pounds and shelters by empowering owners to find new homes for their pets with our support. Our program offers a simple, reliable, and user-friendly solution to help you place your pet directly into a loving new home, avoiding the need for them to stay in the shelter.
About The Program
Allows you to safely rehome your own pet with our support
As the person who understands your pet best, OARP allows you to play an active role in managing the rehoming process and finding the best match for your pet when it comes to a new home. Your pet will remain safe and happy in your home until a new adoptive family is found for them.
Our shelter team will provide ongoing support and guidance to ensure a smooth transition. Prospective adopters have the opportunity to engage directly with you, gaining valuable insight into your pet’s behaviour and needs in a natural environment.
Creates more space in shelters for at-risk animals
With thousands of pets euthanised in Australian pounds annually, we must do what we can to keep pets out of the pound system. Keeping your pet home with you during the rehoming process, frees up valuable resources in shelters and smaller rescue organisations, allowing them to focus on the most vulnerable community pets who lack safe homes.
How The Program Works
1. Application:
Complete an OARP application form below to provide details about your pet and your situation.
2. Consultation:
A SCAR team member will contact you to discuss your pet’s suitability for the program. Depending on your pet’s needs, a behavioural consult or veterinary examination may be recommended at the owner’s cost. Low-cost options are available through SCAR.
3. Documentation:
Submit proof of ownership and relevant veterinary history.
4. Service Fee:
Pay a non-refundable service fee to help us maintain the program. (If your circumstances change, and you can keep your pet, the fee supports ongoing community pet assistance.)
5. Adoption Profile:
We create an adoption profile for your pet on our website using the information and photos you provide.
6. Applications and Communication:
Adoption applications will be forwarded to your email, allowing you to respond to interested adopters. Tips for effective communication and meetings will be provided.
7. Meet and Greet:
Arrange a meet and greet with potential adopters to ensure a good fit.
8. Finalising the Adoption:
Once a match is found, the adopter pays the adoption fee, and both parties sign an adoption contract. Arrange a time for your pet to move to their new home.
Why is there an adoption fee? The adoption fee helps cover the costs of maintaining the program and supporting other pets in need
