Welcome to the SCAR Community Animal Hospital!
In 2019, the SCAR Community Animal Hospital became the very first low-cost veterinary clinic in Hume City Council and has continued to ensure our high-quality desexing and veterinary care is always affordable to our clients.
We advocate for the human-animal bond, and we understand that your pet is your best friend and that their health and well-being is the most important thing. When unexpected illness or injury occurs, we believe every pet deserves access to quality veterinary care – no matter their owner’s financial situation.
Our compassionate veterinarians and nurses are a comforting ear, an understanding heart, and a promise: While your four-legged friend is in our care, they’ll be treated like OUR best friend too!
When you bring your pets to see our veterinary team, not only will they receive exceptional care, but you will play a part in helping us to offset the cost of vet care to pet owners experiencing hardship, as well as assisting us to continue the rehabilitation of homeless animals in our shelter facility.

Our Services
A range of medical services, from routine vaccinations and wellness exams to diagnostics and soft tissue surgeries. Committed to educating pet owners on the health and safety of their pets, desexing is at the forefront of our mission! Check out all the services you can find at the SCAR Community Animal Hospital below!
Desexing
Desexing your pet is a surgical procedure that prevents your pet from being able to reproduce. This is one of the most frequent surgeries performed by our vets, and we aim to make this experience stress-free for both owner and pet.
When grant funding is available, we run heavily subsidised cat desexing days, which aim to service pet owners in other council shires as well. Find out more about our Cat Desexing Days
There are many benefits to desexing your pet, including:
- Preventing unwanted litters, which can be very costly, and may add to the already overwhelming number of stray animals that are put down each year
- Prevention of testicular cancer and prostate disease in males,
- Prevention of pyometra (infection of the uterus) and mammary tumours (breast cancer) in females
- Stopping the “heat” cycle in females (females come into season approximately every 6 months)
- Reduction of council registration fees
Vaccinations
At SCAR community animal hospital, we provide Vaccinations to protect your pets from common infectious diseases from 6-8 weeks of age to ensure they are happy and healthy.
As part of your pets visit for his/her vaccination, the Veterinarian will perform a consultation which includes a thorough nose to tail exam to detect any health concerns or identify other health related issues such as heart murmurs, ear infections, lumps and bumps, skin allergies and dental disease that may be present.
We provide the following Vaccinations for your pet:
- Puppy Vaccinations
- Kitten Vaccinations
- Adult Dog and Cat Vaccinations
Dog Vaccinations (C5) protect your canine friend from the following diseases:
- Canine Distemper
- Canine Hepatitis
- Canine Parvovirus
- Canine Cough (Kennel Cough)
Cat Vaccinations (F3 and FIV) protect your feline friend from the following diseases:
- Feline Rhinotracheitis (Cat Flu)
- Feline Calicivirus (Cat Flu)
- Feline Panleukopenia (Enteritis)
- Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)
Dental Care
As your pet ages, they will naturally develop a layer of plaque on their teeth, which hardens to become a solid layer over the tooth called Tartar. If not effectively managed, this can turn into Gingivitis, an inflammation of the surrounding gums. Any inflammation and infection of the gums can have a direct effect on your pet’s heart and kidneys.
80% of pets suffer some form of dental disease, so, just like us, our four-legged friends need regular check-ups too!
Signs of dental disease include:
- Bad Breath (Halitosis)
- Inflamed Gums (Gingivitis)
- Loose teeth
- Facial swelling
- Excessive Salivation (Drooling)
- Reluctance to eat or chew
Our clinic now also provides Dental x-rays, which are crucial for assessing your pet’s overall oral health. Since a significant portion of a tooth lies beneath the gum line, visual examination alone cannot accurately determine if a tooth is healthy.
Cat Friendly Clinic
The SCAR Community Animal Hospital takes the well-being and happiness of our feline friends very seriously and aims to make sure that all feline visitors feel safe and comfortable whilst in our clinic.
We have a cosy and dedicated waiting space for cats when they come to visit us, so they don’t need to see any dogs whilst in our clinic! This space has carrier covers that have been sprayed with de-stressing Feliway pheromones and stools for the carriers to be placed on, so our kitty friends stay high and not down on the ground.
We hope that our kitty friends (and their lovely owners) enjoy their special waiting area!
Radiographs
We offer digital X-ray technology which allows us to produce high-quality, high-resolution X-ray images more efficiently than traditional film X-rays.
The benefit of having this equipment readily available within our clinic means we can quickly diagnose injuries, particularly in emergency situations.
Ultrasound
We offer in-house ultrasound scans in our clinic, and also work closely with an external Ultrasonographer for more comprehensive procedures when needed.
Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that allows our veterinarians to examine your pet’s internal systems without surgery. Using high-frequency sound waves emitted from an ultrasound machine, similar to those used in human pregnancy monitoring, we create detailed images displayed on a screen. This technology provides invaluable insights into your pet’s health.
We ask that you bring your pet in unfed on the morning of admission for their ultrasound. In many cases, your pet may need to stay with us for the day and may require to be sedated to allow us to do the best scan possible.
Trust our team to provide compassionate care and thorough diagnostics using advanced ultrasound technology.
Pathology
Our team can perform a range of pathology tests within our clinic and also work closely with external laboratories.
We can perform a blood test in our hospital on our state of the art HESKA blood machines and receive results within 15 minutes! We can use these machines to provided Pre- anaesthetic blood tests for your pet before a surgical procedure to make sure your pet’s internal organs are functioning well before any anaesthetic is administered.
Within our clinic, we can also perform Urine, Blood and Faecal tests, along with examining Ear and Skin swabs to determine the cause of your pet’s concern.
