No one should have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their pets.
However, here at Second Chance Animal Rescue (SCAR), we sadly receive calls every day from pet owner in our community who are faced with having to do just that. The rising cost of living has had a huge impact on many households, with many facing poverty & homelessness as a result.
Many of the animals that we rescue from pounds are surrendered because their owners are unable to care for them. Our Free Pet Food Pantry was created to offer support in these challenging times by providing pet food and other donated items such as flea treatments, worming medications, and cat litter to pet owners in need.
How the Program Works
We receive donated food and supplies from pet food companies and members of the public to run this program. These are then distributed to those who need them most via the many Human Service Organisations we partner with across Victoria so that as many people and their pets can gain access to food and supplies as possible.
If you, or a client you are assisting, are in need of pet food or supplies, check out the list of Human Service Organisations below and get in touch with them directly to access what you need for your pet.

Thank you so much for the free cat food I picked up last week from the Shelter. Things have been really tough for our family and this food has honestly helped us out more than you can know

Doing It Tough and Sleeping Rough
Without the support of our generous donors, we wouldn’t be able to help animals in need like Rosie. When Rosie was left abandoned in a carpark on a busy main road with severe leg injuries, it looked like the end of the line – until she met Felicia. Sadly, Felicia’s love and kindness was not enough. After taking Rosie in, a vet advised that Rosie’s leg was sadly so damaged that it needed to be amputated. With vet bills totalling $4,500 and no employment, Felicia was struggling, and that was before she had even begun to think about having to feed Rosie as well. Thanks to the support of Second Chance Animal Rescue Inc., who provide weekly donations of pet food to pets like Rosie, Felicia had one less thing to stress about. To all our donors, we are so appreciative of all the good that you do

After falling on hard times we needed some help to care for our beautiful furbaby López… he is our world and it broke our hearts to not be able to offer him the care he deserved. The team at Second Chance were able to help us get by with a care package from their Free Pet Food Pantry and this has helped us out dramatically! We don’t need to worry about how we are going to feed López for the next few weeks and can focus on getting back on our feet.

I just wanted to thank you for the donations of dog food to United Minds Community Services. I have recently been laid off work and they’ve helped me with some groceries. It was so great getting the food for the dog too – if he’s happy then I’m happy. It does get hard to find the money for groceries when you’ve had to pay a few big bills, so it really helps. There are so many people struggling at the moment. I would go hungry myself before having to give up my pet, but I can imagine that there are families with kids who might have to face that reality. Every bit of help makes a difference, so thanks for the great work you do!
